Punk's aesthetic was born from necessity and attitude: photocopies, ransom-note lettering, torn paper, safety pins, and a total disregard for professional polish. Jamie Reid's Sex Pistols graphics made destruction itself a visual style.
Beneath the chaos was a serious proposition — you don't need permission, a degree, or expensive equipment to make design. The zine, and much of today's independent and street design, descends from this idea.
