Art Nouveau dissolved the boundary between fine and applied art, treating posters, book covers, and storefronts with the same care as painting and sculpture.
Its flowing lines, organic ornament, and total environments — think Alphonse Mucha's posters or Hector Guimard's Paris Métro entrances — made graphic design visible to the public at large, and the poster became its signature medium.
