Industrialization flooded Victorian England with ornate, badly made goods. William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered by championing handcraft, honest materials, and the belief that well-designed objects should be part of everyone's daily life.
Its political ideals often outran its affordability, but the movement's central question — should design serve beauty and society, or the factory? — has never gone away.
