Illustration for Constructivism

Born in revolutionary Russia, Constructivism treated design as a tool for building a new society. Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitzky, and the Stenberg brothers turned the poster into an instrument of persuasion — bold diagonals, dramatic angles, red and black, photomontage instead of decoration.

Its influence traveled far beyond its politics. Nearly every poster designed with a strong diagonal and a condensed sans serif is, knowingly or not, speaking Constructivist.
