Image and Typography
The relationship
Image · LEARN

Most design is neither pure image nor pure type — it is the negotiation between the two. Type can sit on an image, interrupt it, echo it, or fight it, and each choice changes what the combination means.
The fundamentals are contrast and conversation. Give the type a place to live — a quiet zone, a panel, a strong crop — or let it deliberately collide with the image for energy. Match the weight of the letterforms to the weight of the picture.
Study posters, covers, and title sequences: they are the laboratory of this relationship. The best ones feel inevitable, as if the words and the picture were made together — because they were.
